NEW TO THE TABLE

Your next favorite starts here.

There is no single best first board game. A good starting point is a game whose main decision sounds enjoyable to your group. Choosing a tile, collecting train cards, and passing a hand of sushi cards feel very different even when the rules are approachable.

Match the decision to the group

Ticket to Ride gives you a large shared map and visible routes to build. Kingdomino keeps the puzzle compact. Sushi Go! works when you want short rounds and simultaneous choices. Azul adds a sharper contest over a shared supply of tiles.

Teach only what helps the first turn

Explain the goal, show a turn, and make the main scoring idea concrete. Use the publisher’s complete rules when questions arise. For a first session, schedule enough time to unpack, teach, and play without rushing.

You do not need an expansion

Start with one base game and learn what your group enjoys. Extra content is easier to judge after several plays; a larger box is not automatically a better first purchase.
